Edison2 Unveils New Super-MPG Car At The Henry Ford

DEARBORN — Finally, a 21st Century car that really looks like it came from the 21st Century.

The venue was appropriate. The Henry Ford is a shrine to American innovation, and the Edison2 is packed with innovation from stem to stern.

Knockout Results

The knockout stage accomplished its goal and pared the X Prize field: the competition is now down from 21 teams and 26 vehicles to 12 teams and 15 vehicles. There are 8 vehicles left in the Alternative Side-by-Side class, 5 in the Alternative Tandem class and two in the Mainstream class.

The Alternative classes each come with a $2.5 M prize, and are less stringent than the Mainstream class. They require only a 100 mile range and 2 passengers; allow a slower 0 – 60 time, motorcycle tires and any number of wheels; and do not require features such as heat, air conditioning and audio. Edison2 has one car left in the Tandem class. The Mainstream class – $5 M prize, 4 wheels, 4 passengers, 200 mile range – is down to 2 cars: both are Edison2 Very Light Cars.

Our 3 remaining cars achieved combined MPGe (before penalties) of 101.4, 97.0 and 80.3: we feel we are well-positioned to meet the mileage and performance challenges of the finals.

The X Prize understands the importance of good handling to a safe and efficient car, and our cars aced the competition’s dynamic safety tests.

Edison2 had the top speed in the accident avoiding maneuver test (lane change). We had the shortest stopping distance in the 60 – 0 braking test, at 128 feet: 170 feet was the requirement.

We also bested the field in the lateral acceleration (skid pad) test, with our cars having the top three scores. For this test cars see how fast they can run in a 300’ diameter circle; our #97 mainstream car took 14.9 seconds to complete the circle, and achieved a 1.18g (g=acceleration due to gravity) peak reading, with 0.7g required. Compared with a car doing the minimum 0.7, our #97 would be 1.3 seconds and 75 feet ahead.

This is important: safety is achieved not just by performing well in a crash, but also by avoiding accidents altogether. The Very Light Cars are designed to meet both of these components of vehicle safety.

One of the cool things about these results is that Edison2's cars have the narrowest tires in the mainstream class. Unlike some of our competitors, we have not had to change them due to wear. Why are we able to combine grip, small size and low wear? Because the cars are Very Light.

Great, a 'freak show' entry that was designed to win the money and load up on a trailer, never to be seen again except in some car museum..

By the owners own admission, he simply wants to sell the technology to some car manufacturer and stash away his 5 million from the prize purse.

I hope his odd ball design gets Gonged at the starting line.

The whole idea of the X-prize was to force the designers to come up with practical, usable cars that people would actually buy, not some rolling science fair monstrocity like this one.

I don't think I've ever read a post on ANY blog that was so far off the mark... and that's saying a lot, because I read a lot of political blogs and when people start talking politics they check their brains at the door.
This car is probably the LEAST "science fair" -ish of almost any entry. It runs on the stuff you get at your local gas station-- not on batteries, or hydrogen, or air. (It can also run on ethanol.) It's by FAR the cheapest of the mainstream entries, if it reaches production, because it doesn't have any particularly outrageous technology. It has four seats-- and unlike Illuminati's Seven, all four seats face forward, so your passengers don't won't vomit. It is the SAFEST of all of them in that it corners better and stops quicker than all the other entries (should it fail crash testing, I will rescind that last statement, but Edison2 has certainly thought through the safety issues from a racecar perspective).

So: Cheapest (i.e. most likely to have an impact because people can afford it), Safest, Most Reliable (in that it has passed all the tests so far), and over 100mpg-e. Hmm... what exactly were you looking for in the winning entry?
And why exactly is it a "negative" to you that they want to sell the technology to a major auto manufacturer? Why shouldn't they? Fresh thinking and innovation come more easily to small teams. Mass production of many thousands of cars comes most easily to large corporations. What's the problem?
The X-prize was created EXACTLY for this kind of entry: a completely fresh way of thinking about a problem, resulting in an answer that is cheap, effective and safe.
Personally, I would prefer an answer that doesn't use a combustion engine at all. Hopefully one day that answer will present itself. But the X-prize is revealing that as of 2012 or so, your four-seat, 100mpge options giving over 250 miles of range will be: a $65,000 Tesla Model S (for the high-end 300 mile range version) if you have a garage that you can charge it in and don't mind a 300 mile range, or a roughly $25,000 Edison2 VLC and unlimited range.
I hope they find someone to build this. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I couldn't have said it better myself! I think some people, even those that watch the x-prize, are just angrily opinionated without any real reason. It seems they have something to say, but when you ask them what facts convinced them about their opinion, they just go blank on evidence.
I mean, why knock everything down you know? It's just like if you knock everything, you aren't giving the very few people out there that are doing good things a reason to love you as people in general. Much less for them to work long hard hours, days, and years of their life in solving some of the biggest problems the world is beginning to face.
I know that most people don't view themselves as evil, but more often then not, people are self oriented. Edison2 as a team, is rare and precious because there aren't many people willing to risk their limbs for doing something they believe in.
Edison2, if you ever get mad at people, I can totally understand.
