Edison2 Unveils New Super-MPG Car At The Henry Ford

DEARBORN — Finally, a 21st Century car that really looks like it came from the 21st Century.

The venue was appropriate. The Henry Ford is a shrine to American innovation, and the Edison2 is packed with innovation from stem to stern.

X Prize Finals: Week 1

The first week of the X Prize finals is complete and the results are in.

 

Of the 12 teams that came to the finals 4 have been eliminated or have withdrawn (Amp, Tango, Tata and Spira). Very Light Cars now comprise almost a third of the entire field. It is now us against the X Tracers in the Alternative Tandem class, and us against ourselves in the Mainstream class.

Our cars did well in very challenging circumstances. Our #95 tandem car got a combined 110.8 MPGe (including almost 130 in the highway cycle), but the mainstream cars ran later each day, in windy and very hot conditions. The #98 achieved 101.3 MPGe and the #97, 95.6 MPGe.

The #97 car had to deal with a traffic situation during the test that resulted in using turbo boost to stay within lap time requirements: frustrating, given that this car already made 101.4 MPGe in the Knockout stage, and is about 5 MPGe better now because of emissions mapping improvements. This car did meet the X Prize requirement of 90 MPGe; these efficiency results will be averaged with results to come in August at the Argonne National Lab on the dynamometer (ie, no wind or heat).

We also expect to pick up another 1 – 3 MPGe because we now know there is evaporation of E85 from the X Prize supplied fuel tank. This problem was discovered by PIAXP staff, for which we are grateful. We willingly installed this tank for transparency but have had trouble due to its required location in the engine compartment. 

Monday the 26th are the dynamic safety events (lane change, acceleration and braking) and on Tuesday the combined performance and efficiency event. This combined event is the actual race. It requires cars to exceed 100 MPGe within a maximum and minimum speed range on a course with turns. The car in each class that completes this course in the shortest time is eligible to be an X Prize winner.

The end of the week will be coast-down testing, to collect data necessary for the dyno tests at Argonne. Then the cars will be taken by the X Prize to the Argonne Labs in Chicago for emissions and efficiency testing in August.

Winners will be announced in September.

I always knew you could do it Edison 2, as soon as I saw your page I felt a great deal of relief because someone else was now doing what I had only dreamed of. Now I had dreamt long and hard on my initial design, doing drawings and calculations, but I'm only a college student. This way you can show the world what I already knew, that it is possible to use an ICE to get an honest 100 mpge. It is a very remarkable car that makes a lot of sense. So in closing I only have congratulations on making one of my dreams tangible.

Strategy for the combined event may be quite interesting. The electrics have plenty of headroom on MPGe, but possibly little on range; the IC engines have plenty of energy but little margin on MPGe.

On the other hand, if everybody has sufficient energy to complete the course at 70 mph, the alternative classes would appear to come down to who can stay the closest to 70 mph without going over rather than vehicle capabilities - that would be unfortunate, if so.

I tell you Edison 2. Those guys on the fan favorites page are complete idiots. They think that 3 wheeled cars are more stable that 4 wheeled cars. One guy tried to say "Well airplanes have had three points of stability for a long time." What a bunch of idiots! Have you ever seen a curved runway?, or a predator in the wild with three legs? What is most idiotic is how they think that a car with half of the seating, half of the range, less stringent performance requirements, no storage space, no heating, no cooling, no stereo etc. is more practical than your VLC car. It's like their brain just got completely cut off from the normal chemical reactions and they are just like zombies now. Voting obliviously for their favorite team instead of looking at perhaps the most important fact; Edison 2 is the only team that is still in the mainstream competition.

Hi Team Edison - what about passive Safety - do you have airbags? What do your think how much weight they would add? How much weight would ABS and ESP add? Otherwise I highly like your design and would like to see your car being offered worldwide. I am working for a major OEM but am not happy about that we don't work in the very light car field. One of you little startups has to prove you can and will compete and the success will be yours. Also - what do you think about a Rapeseed-Oil burning engine as a high-pressure direct-injected Turbocharged diesel engine. This should bring FC further down.
